The Atlantic Philanthropies, a private foundation with significant interest in older adults and in civic engagement, has retained
Community Planning and Research LLC to implement a national initiative designed to encourage greater civic engagement of people over 60.
In diverse communities, the initiative will focus on increasing opportunities for the growing numbers of people over 60 who seek to
devote time and energy to community improvement and social change.
Why this initiative?
Across the United States, communities are growing a vast, largely untapped resource: people 60 and over. Educated, experienced, and energetic, many of these
people are seeking ways to make a local difference for others. With the aging of the baby boomer generation, 77 million people are entering their 60s beginning
this year. Nearly 45 million of them want to be involved in work that helps others. They constitute a social workforce for good in communities
across the United States.
But while many seek pathways to new service opportunities, most communities lack adequate supports and structures needed to inform, mobilize and engage people 60 and over
to address serious social issues. Through a vanguard of progressive U.S. community foundations, The Atlantic Philanthropies seeks to unleash the potential of this
growing population. |
